HELLO AUTUMN! -- WELCOME FABULOUS FALL!

Wasn't that the hottest summer you can remember? Reminded me of living in Queens, before we had air conditioning!

But now that we can breathe again, let's focus on Yogic breathing! In "The Sivananda Companion Handbook to Yoga", in Pranayama (the science of breath control) there are three parts to each breath: inhalation, retention, and exhalation. And, to many people's surprise, it is the exhalation that is key -- because the more stale air you exhale, the more fresh air you can inhale. Learning Pranayama, especially Kapalabhati (pumping breath), and Anuloma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing) will enhance your Yoga practice. These breathing techniques are an integral part of my Yoga classes, and fully explained and illustrated in the handbook mentioned above.

FIVE PRINCIPLES OF YOGA

  1. PROPER RELAXATION -- Are your hands clenched as you read this? Many people are unaware of how they hold tension in the body.
  2. PROPER EXERCISE -- stretching and toning muscles and ligaments keep the spine flexible and improves circulation.
  3. PROPER BREATHING -- Are you making use of all, not just part of your lungs, to increase your intake of oxygen?
  4. PROPER DIET -- Are you eating nourishing and well-balanced, natural foods?
  5. POSITIVE THINKING & MEDITATION -- helps you to remove negative thinking and still the mind.
