Ancient Remedy for Modern Stress

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy…” as the Porgy & Bess songs goes -

and a good time to rededicate yourself to your Yoga practice. Thousands gathered in Central Park on June 22nd to practice Yoga (NYTimes 6.27.10); they were rained out after 10 minutes, but the outpouring of current and potential students shows how mainstream Yoga has become.

WOMEN IN THE ARTS

SHAKTI is the Sanscrit word for the active feminine principle and is within each of us. Artists are especially suffused with this energy/power, and I bring this up because I have been blessed to have found an Italian teacher, Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni, who is tutoring me in Conversational Italian in preparation for my trip to Italy in August. She is an artist. There will be an exhibit of her work at an East Village restaurant, Matilda’s, 647 East 11 St., which opens on Thursday, July 15th, and I will be there with several of my Yoga students. Exhibit continues through September 30th, with a 20% discount on meals with invite on www.CoralinaContemporaryArt.com.

DOES THE WORD “KEGEL” MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU?

It was a European Dr. Kegel who developed a series of exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles. If you, or someone you know, experience USI, (Urinary Stress Incontinence) when laughing, coughing, sneezing, my FREE 2-HOUR WORKSHOP here in my studio will be helpful. We will discuss the Yogic practice of Bandha Lock, a muscular lock or contraction to control the flow of prana.

Inherent in each person is the power to create. That power, in Sanscrit, is termed Sakti. Sakti is usually understood to be divine inspiration, or sometimes referred to as one's Muse. It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you a woman whose art is informed by this universal power, and manifests in her depictions of nature's undulations.

Provy Munafo'

Born in Boxhill (Melbourne) Australia, Ms Munafo' lives and has a studio in the commune of Villa Franca T., Messina, Sicily, Italy. She has a diploma in Applied Arts from the Institute of Arts of Messina, and has a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Reggio Calabria.

Ms. Munafo' is a teacher, and for many years is actively pursuing an artist's career, distinguishing herself in regional and national exhibits and competitions. She has had one-woman shows and group exhibitions in several Italian cities.

Grace Welch is a certified yoga teacher, with ongoing beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in Islandia, Long Island and Manhattan, New York. She conducts yoga instruction in the Italian language by appointment. She has studied and practiced yoga for 30 years and is a member of the Long Island Yoga Association and the New York Yoga Teachers Association. She is featured in the video "Golden Yoga" (White Lion Press), and has produced a relaxation cassette and an audio CD of her Yoga class. Grace is an Oxford HealthCare Provider.
